Attendee Information

I’m so excited for WordCamp Pittsburgh tomorrow, and I hope that you are, too.

I’ve put together some information that you might find helpful to your WordCamp Pittsburgh experience.

HOW TO GET THERE

The address for Pittsburgh Technical College is 1111 McKee Rd, Oakdale, PA 15071. Here’s a handy Google Map link to help you find your way there. https://goo.gl/maps/27h9xnCMTvy

When you arrive on campus, there should be signage directing you where to park. We will be using the set of doors outside the Cafe area. When you get inside, head up the ramp to registration and all the fun.

WHAT TO WEAR

WordCamp Pittsburgh is a casual event, so you’ll feel at home in jeans and a tee or something more dressy if you choose. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, as long as it isn’t offensive. Remember the Code of Conduct that applies to all members. (https://2018.pittsburgh.wordcamp.org/code-of-conduct/

WHAT TO BRING

I always recommend that you bring a pen or pencil and a notebook. You can also bring your laptop or tablet if you’d like – there will be WiFi available. You do not need to print out or bring your ticket. We have a list of all attendees and we’ll check you off when you get there.

If you’re planning on attending the beginner-oriented sessions (Room 501 on the schedule), it is recommended that you bring a laptop if you can so that you can work along with the presentation if you want.

Please remember that there will be a lot of people and devices trying to access the WiFi. This is not the best time to try to stream shows or videos, or upload/download large files. Please be courteous about your WiFi use. Also, power outlets will be highly coveted. Please be sure to charge your devices only as long as necessary so we can all share.

WHAT TO EXPECT

There will be lots of info presented and lots of knowledge shared. But, you don’t need to try to get it all in at once. Take notes, take brain breaks. Most of the presenters share their slides and we will be sharing info on where to get them. We will also be recording all of the sessions and will announce when they are ready for you to view.

WHERE TO GO

Registration begins officially at 8:00 am. Please try to not arrive before 7:45, so our volunteers have time to get everything set up and ready to help you. Your nametag has a schedule in it – yay! – so you’ll always be able to find out what the next session is. Lunch will be in the Cafe area on level 4. If you requested a Vegan or Gluten free lunch, those will be in the Cafe but set aside from the main buffet area.

Please be sure to take time to visit our sponsors and talk to them about their products and services. We couldn’t put on WordCamp Pittsburgh without them – especially for the low cost that we are able to offer.

Or… take advantage of the “Hallway Track” and talk more with some of the people you meet.

HAPPINESS BAR

Happiness Bar is staffed by volunteers who try to help you with your WordPress questions. Stop by and ask your questions and see how they can help.

The Happiness Bar, drinks, and sponsors are all up the ramp on level 6.

AFTER PARTY

We will be having a casual, all-ages after party for all attendees in the Cafe area immediately after the last session. We will have soft drinks and water, snacks, and pizza. Come and hangout & get to know the other attendees.

Please remember to thank our sponsors and our volunteers. We couldn’t do this without them.

If you have any other questions during WordCamp, find a volunteer in an orange shirt and ask. If you have questions today that aren’t addressed in this post, feel free to send us an email and let us know.

Cheers, and see you tomorrow!

WCPGH18 Schedule is Live!

We quietly added a new link to our menu last week, for the Schedule. Now you can start planning your day at WordCamp! Check out our schedule for the day, read details about our sessions and meet all of our speakers. In addition to all of our great talks, don’t forget about the ever popular “Hallway Track” where you can chat with new and old friends and our “Happiness Bar” where you can get some one-on-one help with your WordPress sites.

Now, to address the next big question that everyone has – tickets will be on sale very soon! We are finalizing some details for the After Party that we want to have in place before tickets are on sale. If you’re not already subscribed, now’s the time to do it so you get a notification when we post tickets available for sale.

Call for Sponsors

Now in its third year, WordCamp Pittsburgh is a camp that just keeps growing! Our first year, we sold out our tickets in less than 24 hours, and we nearly doubled our attendees in our second year. This year we are planning a beginner’s workshop and will be offering limited childcare, to encourage new attendees.

Without our generous sponsors, WordCamp Pittsburgh would not be available to our great local community. For just $20 our attendees have a full day to learn from our speakers, network with others, and experience the friendliness of the local WordPress community.

Call for Speakers

WordCamp Pittsburgh is currently looking for speakers to inspire and inform our anticipated 200 attendees including: designers, developers, bloggers, and content strategists.

Sessions will be 40 minutes, with 25-30 minutes allotted for your talk and 10-15 minutes for Q&A and further discussion.

The deadline to submit your application is 11 PM Eastern on Friday, June 1, 2018. You will be notified when a decision about your submission is made, no later than the end of June.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SPEAKERS:

We’re looking for talks that are relevant to casual WordPress users, experienced developers, and anywhere between. You do not need to be a professional speaker, but you should be knowledgeable about the topic you are presenting. You are encouraged to apply even if you have never spoken at a WordCamp before. If you need some inspiration, take a look at some of the great talks published on http://wordpress.tv/

All submissions are reviewed by the organizing committee. Be prepared to submit your speaker slides or review your presentation with an organizer prior to the event if asked.

Speakers will be provided free admission to WordCamp Pittsburgh 2018 and also invited to attend a speaker dinner the evening before WordCamp Pittsburgh, but we cannot reimburse travel, lodging, or other expenses.

All topics are welcome! In the past, we have had talks on topics such as:

  • WordPress Fundamentals
  • Blogging and Content Creation
  • Design and User Experience
  • Backend Development
  • Workflows
  • Marketing and Branding
  • Running a WordPress Based Business
  • Themes
  • Plugins
  • Security

This year, we would like to hold a WordPress Beginners Workshop, with at least a half day of programming specifically aimed at those new to WordPress. If you would like to present on information relevant to beginners ,we want to hear from you.

Interested? Read on for additional details and submit your proposal below.

Details

  • We’re looking for talks that are immediately relevant (or directly applicable) to casual WordPress users, experienced developers or anywhere between.
  • Talks will be allotted 45 minutes. You can use that time however you like (30 minutes for talking and 15 minutes for questions, 25 for talking and 20 for hands on, etc.).
  • Share > pitch. WordCamps are educational events, not marketing opportunities, so proposing a product pitch will not get you very far with the speaker selection team.
  • Speakers will be offered free admission to WordCamp Pittsburgh and get to attend a speaker dinner, but we can not reimburse travel, lodging, or other expenses.
  • All proposals are due by 11 PM Eastern on Friday, June 1, 2018.
  • Everyone who submits a proposal will be notified of our decision by June 30, 2018.
  • If you’d like to propose multiple topics, please submit the form multiple times, once for each topic.

For more general information about speaking at WordCamps, check out the “official” guide.

The Call for Speakers is now closed. All speakers will be notified when the speaker roster has been determined.

Call for Volunteers

Interested in attending WordCamp Pittsburgh for free? It takes a lot of work to make WordCamp Pittsburgh happen, and we’d love it if you’d join us in making it great. We’re currently taking applications for volunteers.

A sample of the types of volunteers we’re looking for:

  • Design – want to help design the t-shirt and social media graphics/badges for this year? this is for you!

  • Registration – help sign in attendees and hand out t-shirts and any other swag
  • Video – handle the video cameras to record the sessions. Some video experience preferred, but not required.

  • Miscellaneous Prep – help with some of the pre-event stuff
  • Happiness Bar – share your knowledge and help fellow WordPressers with their questions
